How to upgrade your MacBook hard drive (without losing any data).
OK. So, I recently bought a new hard drive for my MacBook. My goal was simple; install the hard drive and move all of my data to the new hard drive. This is how I did it.
1st - Acquire a notebook hard drive.
2nd - Acquire an external hard drive and hook said external to MacBook.
3rd - Acquire SuperDuper!
4th - Start up SuperDuper! and choose the original hard drive in the “copy” drop down and the external in the “to” drop down. Click copy.
5th - Under Startup Disk within System Preferences choose to boot up from the newly fully backed up external. (If the external does not show up, unplug and replug). Power down.
6th - Remove original hard drive and install the new hard drive.
7th - Power up. The MacBook should boot from the external. Start up SuperDuper once again and choose the external in the “copy” drop down and the new drive in the “to” drop down. Hit copy. (If the new drive is not shown go to Disk Utility and format the drive to osx extented).
8th - Go back into Startup Disk and choose to boot from the new drive and reboot.
That is it. Now you have a new drive with an exact backup of your old hard drive that is bootable and ready to rock.
